MacBeth

Conceptual design for Shakespeare’s MacBeth set during the 1880s, in what is now present day New Mexico. Using MacBeth to examine American values of masculinity, individualism, and ambition through the historical context of colonial settler expansion and the realities of the Wild West, I challenge the Hollywood concept of a “cowboy” that has come to be accepted as “fact”: white, heterosexual, and ultimately a tool to erase the rich multicultural history of the American Southwest.
